Marriage in Cyprus is in crisis: Five divorces are granted every day

Which province ranks first?

There are many marriages—and many divorces—on the island. Data from the Statistical Service on the number of couples who decide to go their separate ways is generating a great deal of interest. Approximately five divorces are granted each day.

2019 was a record year, with 2,308 divorces, a number that fell in 2020—the year of the coronavirus—to 1,869. In 2022, the number dropped to 1,500, but over the next two years, it began to rise again. In 2023, the number rose to 2,134, and in 2024, the total number of divorces was 2,107.

The Famagusta District recorded the lowest number of divorces over the past five years, with a double-digit figure, while the capital recorded the highest.

In 2023 alone, the number of divorces in Nicosia reached 891, and in 2024, 794. Limassol follows, with 555 divorces in 2023 and 575 in Cyprus-wide,

the majority of divorces involve marriages between Cypriots. It is also interesting to note that 33 couples who divorced in 2024 had married in the same year, while the majority of divorces—at least for 2024—involved couples who had been together for over 20 years.

Data from the Statistical Service reveal yet another interesting finding. As the number of children a couple has increases, the number of divorces decreases.

In 2024, 1,047 couples who divorced had no children, and another 541 had one child.

In contrast, there were 3 divorces among couples with more than five children and 18 among those with 4 children.
