This year, for the first time, Cyprus is participating in the European Firefighting Forces Pre-positioning Program as a host country for a foreign forest firefighting force, according to a statement from the Department of Forests.
As part of the program, a 21-member team from the Special Forest Operations Unit (EMODE) of the Hellenic Fire Service is in Cyprus and will be on operational standby from September 1 through September 15, the statement adds.

The Forestry Department, which is responsible for the operational coordination of the mission, reports that it has developed a program to familiarize the Greek team with Cyprus’s forest firefighting and monitoring system, its forested areas, fire protection infrastructure, and the country’s specific operational conditions.
Support for the mission during its stay in Cyprus is provided jointly by the Department of Forests and Civil Defense.
As noted, the Firefighting Forces Pre-positioning Program has been implemented at the EU level since 2022 and helps strengthen Member States’ operational capacity for the timely and effective responseforest fires.
