Volos-Kalamata: The League Phase of the Greek Cup Kicks Off

Action at Panthessaliko Stadium
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Volos and Kalamata will play their first official match in the League Phase of the Greek Cup; the two teams will face off on Tuesday, September 1, at 6:00 p.m. at Panthessaliko Stadium.

This is a match between two clubs looking for stability at the start of the season. The two teams are already familiar with each other from this past summer, as they faced off in a preseason friendly on August 10, at the same stadium, with Kalamata winning 2-0.

The home team has already secured a spot in the League Phase following their 3-1 victory over Heraklis in the qualifying round. The Cup is a competition in which Volos aims to play a leading role, and the first home game of the new phase is a good opportunity to get off to a positive start.

In the league, however, the start was less than ideal. The team from Magnesia suffered a 2-0 loss to OFI in Heraklion, while in their second match they drew 1-1 with Heraklis. In fact, they had to wait until the final minutes to score the equalizer.

Kostas Bratsos cannot count on Gabriel, Katsikas, Medil, and Lekous, and announced a 21-player roster after completing preseason training on Monday. The squad consists of: Siabanis, Koselev, Mygas, Es Saoubi, Kargas, Ayakua, Lykourinos, Tsochanis, Fabio, Garavelas, Barre, Komba, Grosdis, Vainopoulos, Regis, Furtado, Tzoka, Lambrou, Gonzalez, Charalamboglou, Urtado

Kalamata’s return to the Stoiximan Super League after 25 years is, in itself, a significant milestone for the club. Last year’s undefeated run in Superbet League 2 has raised high expectations, and the team wants to prove that it can meet the demands of the new division.

In the Cup competition, however, Kalamata got off to an impressive start. The 4-0 victory over Panetolikos sent a clear message about the potential of Panagiotis Christofileas’s squad.

In the Stoiximan Super League, however, the results were not as impressive. The 3-2 loss to Aris in the season opener and the 0-2 defeat to Panetolikos in Agrinio left the team without any points, but the Cup is a different story and an opportunity for an immediate competitive response.

For the Black Storm, Gelios, Cataldi, and Stroungis were left out of the squad, while Perez, Fribong, Vargas, Miranda, and and Kurminovski.

Here is the full Kalamata roster: Ginis, Vasiljević, Varelas, Rodrigues, Panagiotou, Bakayoko, Gesan, Kaloutsikidis, Ignjatović, Hatzitheodoridis, Alonso, Diarra, Pinheiro, Liatsikouras, Martín, Kareaso, Hamza, Bonetto, Sigurdsson, Moreira, Angelis, Mouzakis.

Possible starting lineups:

Volos (Bratsos): Lykourinos, Ayakua, Kargas, Mygas – Barre, Grosdis – Lambrou, Tzoka, Crespi – Charalamboglou.

Kalamata (Christofileas): Vasiljevic, Kaloutsikidis, Gesan, Rodrigues, Alonso – Martín, Liatsikouras, Diarra – Moreira, Sigurdsson, Bonetto.

Referee: Matsoukas
; Assistant Referees: Christodoulou, Klepetzanis
; Fourth Official: Bourouzikas
; VAR: Poulikidis, Andrianos
