New Tensions in Syria: Clashes Between Government Forces and Druze Leave Ten Injured

The situation in Suwaida is tense

Ten members of the security forces of Syria’s de facto government were wounded Monday night in clashes with armed groups in an area inhabited mainly by members of the Druzein southern Syria, state television reported.

The situation remains tense in Suwayda, home to the majority of the Shiite minority, following the deadly clashes a year ago, the worst since the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.

The incident was reported the day after two civilians were killed during clashes between armed groups and government forces on the outskirts of the city, according to two sources in the security forces in the area.

The security forces members were wounded while “repelling attacks” by armed groups against targets around Tal Hadid and along the Walga axis, the internal security command of the province of the same name reported on state television.

The television network had earlier reported in a news update that four people had been injured.

Druze factions control the city of Suwayda and other areas of the province of the same name, despite Damascus’s efforts to assert its authority.

This is one of the last areas remaining outside the control of the de facto Islamist government, which has been saying since late 2024 that it wants to reunite the country, which has been fragmented following 13 years of civil war.

In a statement released late Monday night, the “National Guard,” an armed group led by the powerful Druze leader Hikmat al-Hijri, accused government forces of opening fire with “mortar shells” and “indiscriminately” used heavy “machine guns,” with the “intent to injure civilians,” adding that at least one child was injured.

The organization added that it “responded with appropriate measures,” warning that “these attacks will not go unanswered.”
