Divorces in Cyprus are rising sharply; according to the latest data from the Statistical Service, an average of five are granted each day. The reasons behind the high number of divorces were analyzed on the Alpha News program by attorney Alekos Argyrou, counseling psychotherapist and marriage counselor Elena Ioannidou, and developmental psychologist Aristoniki Theodosiou Tryfonidou on the “Alpha Enimerosi” program.

Mr. Argyrou noted that during divorce proceedings, men are required to immediately arrange for child support payments and establish communication with their children, while women seek to secure their living arrangements. When asked whether some couples choose divorce to take advantage of government benefits or assistance, the attorney noted that the criteria and oversight are now particularly strict.
Ms. Ioannidou expressed the view that the sharp increase in divorces stems from a lack of communication between couples or from new circumstances and changes compared to the time before marriage.
Ms. Tryfonidou explained that over time, the social “stigma” attached to divorced parents and children has been eliminated, though she noted that it always remains a “thorn” in the children’s psyche. As she said, before the actual divorce between a couple, estrangement and alienation have already set in. He emphasized that, on average, divorced couples spend six years contemplating and processing the divorce process.
