Turkish authorities announced today that they had lost contact with a cargo ship and its ten crew members after it collided overnight with another vessel in the Sea of Marmara, southwest of Istanbul.
These two Turkish merchant ships “collided” around 3:00 a.m. (local time and Cyprus time) 18 nautical miles south of Silivri, a city west of Istanbul.
“It is currently impossible to reestablish contact with the merchant ship Tugberk Imamoglu and its 10 crew members,” the Istanbul governor’s office announced.
Ships and a helicopter “are continuing search operations,” according to a statement from the governor’s office, which clarifies that “no visible damage has been detected” on the second ship, the chemical/oil tanker Alsu.
Authorities did not specify what cargo the Tugberk Imamoglu was carrying as it crossed the Sea of Marmara en route to the Black Sea.
