“In a state of confusion, Maradona should not have been treated at home”

What the psychiatrist and the internist testified

Diego Maradona, who was experiencing alcohol withdrawal and was therefore “not in his normal state,” should never have been treated at home to recover, but rather at a rehabilitation center, two experts agreed while testifying at the trial investigating the circumstances surrounding “Dieguito’s” death.

A psychiatrist and an internist specializing in complex pathologies testified on the 38th day of the trial regarding the circumstances of Maradona’s death in 2020, while he was recovering at home following neurosurgery.

Beyond the surgery itself, Maradona suffered from “a state of confusion related to alcohol withdrawal and was therefore not a suitable candidate for discharge from the hospital,” said psychiatrist José Luis Covelli.

“Psychomotor agitation, impulsivity, irritability, and attempts to escape” were his symptoms following the surgery, he emphasized.

“This is a patient for whom institutionalization is indicated. Home care does not meet the necessary conditions for monitoring the patient’s cognitive progress in this state of confusion,” he insisted. Testifying after him, internist Ramiro Larea added that the soccer player “was not in his normal state; he was experiencing a withdrawal episode, which made it difficult to manage him… he should have been admitted to a rehabilitation center.”

“Home care was arranged, but it wasn’t really medical care. It was more like home monitoring,” said Dr. Larea, referring to the recovery program organized for Maradona at a house rented for the occasion in Tigre, north of Buenos Aires.
