An immediate investigation into the causes of flooding on 28 October Avenue and in the wider Engomi area, following last Saturday’s severe weather, the Nicosia District Local Government Organization (EOA) announced.
According to the EOA, the investigation will focus, among other things, on the sizing of stormwater drainage pipes, the potential impacts of the channelization of the Klimos River, as well as any deficiencies in the stormwater drainage network both in the area and on adjacent streets.
At the same time, the impacts of the absence of retention ponds at the International Exhibition Center and the old Nicosia Airport will be examined; these, according to the EOA, are one of the issues that must be evaluated.
The NEA in Nicosia describes the case as complex, noting that a thorough investigation and time are required, in order first to identify the causes of the problem and then to address the accumulated problems and failures of previous decades.
“As the Nicosia Water Authority, we have already advocated for and are requesting a decision by the Council of Ministers so that we may undertake the design and construction of the retention ponds,” the statement notes.
However, as noted, this is contingent upon the relevant Ministry immediately issuing the final decisions and officially designating the locations of the retention ponds.
The EEA’s announcement follows the floods that occurred last Saturday, August 29, when severe weather caused serious problems in several areas of Nicosia.
