U.S. President Donald Trump is privately considering the possibility of declaring an end to the war with Iran, even as the Pentagon is quietly expanding its troop deployment in the Middle East, according to a report published yesterday in the Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper reports that Trump has discussed with his senior aides “whether to declare an end to the war with Iran,” a move the president reportedly “favors.” He believes that maintaining intense economic pressure will eventually force Tehran “either to dismantle its nuclear program or to collapse.”
Last week, the U.S. launched Operation Economic Pariah, targeting Iran’s main economic arteries, including the Iranian sectors of oil, shipping, aviation, gold, technology, and the digital economy.
Despite private discussions, the Pentagon is expanding its deployments in a sign that the war could drag on “well into next year.”
The U.S. military maintains 50,000 troops and 19 warships in the Middle East, including two aircraft carriers and 13 guided-missile destroyers, to ensure the president has operational “flexibility.”
