Yerson Chacón returned to competitive action after a 310-day absence, in the opening-day derby of the Cyprus League by Stoiximan against APOEL. In a deeply personal message, he spoke about the challenging journey he had to endure before stepping onto the field again.
The 23-year-old left winger for AEK referred to the doubts, the pain, and the difficult days of rehabilitation, emphasizing that this period was a lesson in patience and personal empowerment.
In detail: “It took 310 days before I could play again. It was a difficult process, full of learning, doubts, and moments when I didn’t know if I would ever be well again—or even the same person I used to be. There were good moments and not-so-good moments, pain, discomfort, days when I didn’t feel like doing anything—and yet I had to get up and do my rehab.
I know this wasn’t just an injury. It was also a break that allowed me to become stronger in other ways, to get to know myself better, to learn patience, and to appreciate every little moment. Today, I am blessed to be healthy, to be well, and to be able to continue doing what I love. I thank God because I know He protects me every day and helps me through every challenge. Now more than ever, I can say that His timing is perfect and His plans are unique. I thank everyone who has been with me throughout this long process. To my family, who never let me down and always offered words of support. To Dr. Leitao, Dimitri, Edgar Silva, and the entire medical staff of the association, for all their hard work and dedication.
To Bukky, who helped me become stronger, learn to endure difficulties, and realize that this was just the beginning of something beautiful: my comeback. Thank you, Jere, for helping me stay mentally strong, stay on the right path, and enjoy the process. Thank you, David, for always being there, for advising me, and for thinking about what would be best for me.
And to you, Michelle, for being a pillar of strength, for never leaving me alone, for being there during my tough days, for putting up with my mood swings, and, above all, for never giving up on me. And to my Alaia, who is always there, filling us with love and joy.
Today I’m returning to competition after 310 days—a stronger person, with a different mindset and a new perspective. These 310 days have taught me that every process takes its own time and that we must also learn to enjoy the journey.
Today, all I can say is:
THANK YOU. Thank you to God, my family, and everyone who stood by me and took care of me.”
