Another competitive season has come to an end for Pavlos Kontidis, who continues to perform at a high level and remains among the elite of world sailing, and is currently ranked No. 1 in the world in the ILCA7 class.
Although the outcome of the World Championship in Dunlaoghaire, Ireland—where he finished 28th—may not have been what he hoped for, but overall, 2026 brought new successes for the Cypriot sailor, who is now aiming to secure qualification for the “Los Angeles 2028” Olympic Games.
“The competitive year has come to an end, and to be honest, I’m very happy with my season. It started with an injury, and until the end of March, I was essentially out of the boat,” says the sailor from the Limassol Nautical Club, adding: “Fortunately, I managed to make a comeback and start performing well, especially at the European Championships in May in Split, where winning the gold medal was a very emotional moment for me.”
After being crowned European Champion for the third time —the other two in 2018 and 2022—Pavlos Kontidis went on to earn another distinction, this time on the Olympic stage. “That was followed by the silver medal at the Los Angeles Grand Slam. Unfortunately, the World Championships didn’t go as I’d hoped, but there isn’t much time to dwell on that,” he emphasizes, continuing: “In four and a half months, the World Championships in Brazil are coming up, which will also serve as a qualifying event for the Olympic Games.”
The World Championships in Fortaleza, the capital and largest city of the Brazilian state of Ceará in northeastern Brazil, will take place from January 15 to 23, 2027.
The two-time Olympic silver medalist will take a few days off after the World Championships—which was the last competition of the year— before returning to full-scale training to properly prepare for the competition and secure his spot in the sixth Olympic Games of his career.
Kontidis’s Super Grand Sponsor is Freedom24, while Allwyn has been a long-standing major sponsor. He is also sponsored by Ayia Napa Marina and Petrolina. Supporters include Alassia NewShips Management, the Leventis Foundation, the Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, the VITA Group, and Hartmann Holdings LTD. A constant companion on every journey is NUTRICA nutritional supplements, a line of supplements created based on the two decades of experience that Pavlos Kontidis and his team have gained in elite sports.
