"Paper War" was sparked by a letter from Yiannis Karousos, President of the Famagusta District Local Government Organization and Vice President of DISY, to the Minister of Health regarding the serious staffing problems the staff shortages faced by the Emergency Department (TAEP) of the Famagusta General Hospital.

AKEL, in a written statement, points out that he should “know that the problems at the Famagusta General Hospital did not just arise today.”

“AKEL has been highlighting these issues for years through continuous actions, interventions, and appeals. Responsibility for the current situation at the Famagusta General Hospital lies with both the present government and the previous one, in which Mr. Karousos served. “As a member of the Cabinet, did he not consider it important to highlight and address the problems facing the Famagusta General Hospital?”

The party notes that “it is also outrageous that during a protest organized by AKEL outside the Famagusta General Hospital regarding the long-standing problems it faces, DISY—whose vice president is Mr. Karousos—accused AKEL of exploiting healthcare for partisan purposes.”

“AKEL has repeatedly pointed out that the hospital’s problems are not limited to a single issue. They concern its operation and administration, adequate staffing and vacancies in key specialties, as well as the departure of more than 30 doctors in recent years. All of this ultimately affects what should go without saying: the provision of high-quality and effective care to patients.”

“These problems have been known for years and were not just discovered today,” the statement notes, “which is why action and solutions are needed now from those in charge—not more observations and sugarcoated portrayals.”

“The Scientific Director bears her own responsibility for the scientific and operational standing of the hospital, just as those with political and administrative oversight also bear responsibilities. Finally, the Board of Directors of OKYPY and the Minister of Health must abandon the rosy picture and face reality as it is, providing solutions to the long-standing problems that affect both the hospital’s operations and patient care.”

In a new statement, Mr. Karousos expressed surprise that AKEL “is attempting to turn my intervention regarding the serious problems at the Famagusta General Hospital into a partisan confrontation” and calls on the party to set this aside so the problem can be resolved. He also lists the significant investments and upgrades made at the Famagusta General Hospital during the DISY administration.
