It was by no means an easy task to subdue the two Turkish Cypriots who caused chaos on the western side of Limassol yesterday morning.
The details presented in court, where the suspects were brought, show that it was a miracle no one was killed.
It took police officers a full 27 minutes to stop the van in which they were traveling and which was careening wildly.
The Turkish Cypriot driver, in a frenzy, attempted to evade arrest by driving extremely recklessly, crashing into other vehicles, attempting to ram vehicles belonging to members of Team Z and other units pursuing him, steering the van toward police officers, and, together with his passenger, throwing objects at the officers.
It all began when a member of the bicycle police signaled the vehicle—which had no front license plates—to stop. The officer recognized the driver, as he had been arrested a month earlier for a similar incident and had attempted to run the officer over.
Reinforcements were called to the area, and patrol cars from the traffic police and the Special Operations Unit (OPE) pursued him through the city streets, firing shots at his tires.
After his arrest, the driver admitted to police officers that he was under the influence of drugs. A test he underwent came back positive for methamphetamine.
Both were taken into custody for a period of 7 days.
