An away match as Olympiacos aims for a three-game winning streak!
The “Red-and-Whites” face Volos tonight in the third round of the Stoiximan Super League, looking to extend their winning streak at the start of their domestic campaign, with their fans once again turning out in force at Panthessaliko Stadium!
Having (presumably) completed the roster shake-up brought about by their elimination by Nijmegen, Olympiacos kicked off this year’s league campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 home victory over Atromitos, thanks to a goal in the 82nd minute, and then went on to defeat Asteras AKTOR by the same score in Tripoli, in a match in which they took the lead in the 31st minute on a goal by Zota Silva, but failed to capitalize on their chances to “seal the deal.” In the end, they secured the three points and are now traveling to Magnesia for the 3X3.
Last Wednesday, they made their debut in the League Phase of the Superbet Greek Cup, easily defeating AEL Novibet 4-0 in Larissa. With Medilibar rotating the lineup extensively, Gonzalez scored his first goal for the red-and-whites to open the scoring, followed by goals from Sa, Bruno, and Roca. In four days, they’ll face Volos again, this time at the “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium for the Cup, and then will host OFI before its season opener in this year’s Europa League, at home against the Polish club Jagiellonia.
On the field, José Luis Medilibar has no injury concerns to deal with and has included Puerta in his roster; it’s possible that Puerta could make his debut with Olympiacos! Apart from Yaremchuk and Clayton, who are set to leave, Bailey and the young Filis were not included in the squad.
Olympiacos’ roster: Ortega, Popovic, Stournaras, Saliakas, Smailović, Pirola, Karmo, Pedersen, Retsos, Bruno, Tiknizian, Fortounis, Sa, Martins, García, Puerta, Sipioni, Froiler, Cicinho, Ese, Roca, El Kaabi, Zota, González.
On the other hand, Volos has not gotten off to the best possible start in this year’s league, as it has yet to secure a victory in the first two matchdays. They initially secured a victory and advanced in the Superbet Greek Cup against Heraklis, but then lost 2-0 to OFI in Crete and drew 1-1 with Gireos. A few days ago, they trailed 2-0 against Kalamata in the opening match of the League Phase of the Cup, but fought back to tie the game, ending in a 2-2 draw.
The home team’s coach, Kostas Bratsos, will once again have Medil at his disposal, as he has recovered from the injury that had been plaguing him, while Pierre-Gabriel, Lekous, and Katsikas, as well as Ivan Neyiu, whose absence was announced on Wednesday, September 2.
Volos’ roster: Siabanis, Koselev, Mygas, Es Saoubi, Kargas, Atsiakoua, Medil, Lykourinos, Tsochanis, Fabio, Garavelas, Bare, Komba, Grosdis, Regis, Furtado, Tzoka, Lambrou, Gonzalez, Charalamboglou, Urtado
Probable starting lineups:
Volos (Bratsos): Siabanis, Mygas, Kargas, Es Saoubi, Medil, Barre, Komba, Joka, Gonzalez, Lambrou, Urtado
Olympiacos (Medilibar): Ortega, Saliakas, Retsos, Pirolá, Tiknizian, Ese, Sipioni, Martins, Zota Silva, Roca, El Kaabi
