In today’s (September 5, 7:00 p.m.) match between Apollon and Anorthosis, for the second round of the Cyprus League by Stoiximan, Hernán Lozada took center stage, in comments he gave to the “Blue-and-Whites’” Match Program, explaining what he expects from the game compared to the season opener against Aris.
The Spanish coach emphasized that the circumstances are completely different, as Anorthosis has retained several players from last season, unlike their city rivals’ new roster.
At the same time, he predicted that it will be a match filled with physical battles, where both teams will need to showcase their physical prowess.
Finally, he highlighted the need to improve defensive play, calling for greater focus as well as limiting the opponent’s shots and scoring opportunities.
In detail: “Tonight’s game will be completely different from the season opener. We have a different opponent and different players available. Aris is a team with many young players, while Anorthosis has several familiar faces from last season.
We know how important this game is and that we’re facing a tough opponent. We saw that in their season opener against Aris. Until the end of the first half, the game was very evenly matched and competitive. Then, with the second goal and the red card, the situation changed. Anorthosis has experienced players, a new coach, and a different system, while also boasting a rich tradition and a long history against Apollon. In games like this, there’s always extra motivation and energy. I expect a tough, physical matchup with plenty of one-on-one battles, which will require patience.
Every game is important, and we want to win, whether at home or on the road. We have more than 90 minutes to do it, so we need patience, focus, and efficiency when creating chances.
The first thing we need to improve is our defensive play. We need to limit our opponent’s shots and scoring chances.
Defensive stability was one of the factors that made us very strong during last year’s winning streak, as well as during preseason and our first European games. We worked hard on that throughout the week. We need more focus and aggression, tighter defensive lines, and less time for the opponent to think and create chances.
The second goal against Aris was a great example of the work we’re doing in training. When you repeat a pattern and it pays off in the game, it brings you joy and confidence and gives you a reason to keep working on it. Many teams now know how we play, so we have to find new ways to create opportunities. That particular goal was the result of a collective move and attack involving many players.
As for the fans, I can’t ask for more than what they’re already giving us. You did it in the European games and throughout last season. When we feel your presence—when you cheer, sing, and spur us on—it makes a huge difference. You showed that against Aris, too, when—even after we fell behind twice—you never stopped supporting us and believing in us. That’s the connection we all need to succeed.”
