The President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, spoke by phone with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Andy Burnham, during which they agreed to meet at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
On the occasion of his assumption of office, President Christodoulides congratulated him and wished him every success in carrying out his new responsibilities. The two leaders agreed to hold their first meeting in September, during the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly.
During their conversation, the two leaders referred to the historic and multifaceted bilateral relations between Cyprus and the United Kingdom, which in recent years have entered a particularly close and substantive phase, as well as to the significant prospects for further deepening cooperation between the two countries in critical areas of mutual interest.
Special mention was made of relations between the European Union and the United Kingdom. The President of the Republic noted that further strengthening these relations was one of the priorities of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union, emphasizing the strategic importance of a stronger and closer relationship between London and Brussels. He also reiterated the Republic of Cyprus’s readiness to continue playing a constructive role in further deepening cooperation between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Regarding the Cyprus issue, President Christodoulides reiterated that resolving the Cyprus issue remains his top priority and briefed the British Prime Minister on the ongoing efforts of the UN Secretary-Generaland the significance of the current juncture for the resumption of substantive negotiations within the agreed framework, as set forth in the relevant Security Council resolutions. In this context, he emphasized the particularly important role that the United Kingdom can play, as a guarantor power, a Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council and penholder for resolutions concerning Cyprus, in the effort to resume the negotiation process from the point at which it had been suspended.
Finally, the two leaders exchanged views on regional developments and the situation in the Middle East and agreed to remain in close contact, with a shared commitment to further deepening cooperation between Cyprus and the United Kingdom.
