Thomas Walkup will continue his career with Dubai BC. Ultimately, before the two sides could resolve their differences in court, an out-of-court settlement was reached, with the Emirati team agreeing with Olympiacos BC to buy out his contract.
Reports indicate that the “Red-and-Whites” will receive €2,240,000 in compensation, while the player will now sign a contract with annual earnings reaching €2,500,000 (whereas the final year of his contract with Olympiacos provided for €1,150,000).
It should be noted that the Texan guard, having received a lucrative offer from the Arabs, stayed away from Olympiacos’ preseason training and filed a complaint regarding his contract. In fact, the EuroLeague had initiated disciplinary proceedings against Dubai BC for illegally approaching Walkup.
The 33-year-old star played for Olympiacos for five years as the team’s starting point guard and won four league titles, three Cups, four Super Cups, and the EuroLeague.
In its announcement, Olympiacos BC thanked the player for his contributions, showing that in the end, the parting of ways wasn’t quite as… unpleasant as had been predicted. “It was a shared journey full of successes, with great moments as well as challenges. We hope this beautiful journey will remain forever in everyone’s hearts and minds. The agreement with Dubai Basketball also marks the beginning of a closer relationship between the two clubs, based on mutual respect and Dubai Basketball’s sincere commitment to the EuroLeague’s core values,” the announcement stated.
