Does Christiana want to “enter” the presidential race? How does she respond, and what does she say about Christodoulides’ administration?

Discussions and internal party processes ahead of the 2028 presidential election are setting the political scene ablaze. Speaking on the “Alpha Eνημέρωση” program, DIKO Deputy Chair Christiana Erotokritou said that the party may field its own candidate for the highest office in the Republic of Cyprus, based on the track record and experience gained during the tenure of the late Tassos Papadopoulos. Citing the party’s history and experience, Ms. Erotokritou expressed the view that DIKO is in a position to refrain from endorsing any candidate from other parties and to field its own candidate. Ms. Erotokritou noted that DIKO’s increased participation in the government of Nikos Christodoulides has satisfied the party’s leadership and supporters “to remain in the coalition government.”

“When and if DIKO has the facts before it and opens the discussion, the collective bodies will take all the facts into account and evaluate all the candidates—including our own, as well as Nikos Christodoulides if he runs again—and the choices of the other parties.»

Ms. Erotokritou referred to this as a premature discussion and emphasized that the race for the presidency has already begun among specific individuals “who hope and aspire to be candidates for 2028.”

“And when we were discussing the Speakership of the House, Nikolas Papadopoulos stated that he is not involved in the 2028 presidential election.”

When asked to choose between Nikos Christodoulides and Democratic Alarm, the Deputy Chair of DIKO responded that she would not prejudge or ignore discussions and decisions made by the party’s leadership and collective bodies.

“To date, we have had a satisfactory working relationship with the government of Nikos Christodoulides, and we believe that significant positive strides have been made for our country so far, thanks to reforms or policy changes. If you ask me whether some things have been left behind, of course they have. Have mistakes been made? Of course they have.”

Ms. Erotokritou made it clear that such critical decisions for the country are not made based on personal sympathies or individual preferences, but for the good of the country. When asked if she herself would be interested in securing the nomination as a candidate for the 2028 presidential election, she replied that this was a “purely hypothetical discussion.”

“It is flattering for someone to have their name mentioned for positions of immense responsibility. I accept this with great humility and respect. If my fellow candidates deem that I am capable of carrying out these duties or fulfilling this role, I will discuss it. This isn’t something one seeks for oneself. It is the result of the people’s will and my colleagues’ assessment of my competence.”
