Iranian aviation sector added to U.S. blacklist

Washington promises retaliation against those who provide financial assistance to the Iranian regime

On Tuesday, the U.S. government added the entire Iranian aviation sector to its blacklist and threatened to impose sanctions on any organization that does business with Iranian airlines.

“All Iranian airlines” are now subject to economic sanctions, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, which manages the economic front of Washington’s war against Tehran.

Iran’s major airlines, Mahan Air and Iran Air, are already facing sanctions. Twenty-seven airlines operating domestic or regional routes have been added to this list.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury accuses Iranian authorities of “using the aviation sector (…) to transport weapons, personnel, and illicit goods.”

The U.S. government has also decided to suspend exemptions related to the aviation sector, such as the one allowing non-U.S. companies to operate U.S.-manufactured aircraft in Iran.

Among the companies targeted by the sanctions are two—one from the United Arab Emirates, and the other from Turkey, which are accused of acting as “intermediaries” to enable Mahan Air to take delivery of three Boeing 777s “in the summer of 2026.”

“We have promised severe retaliation against those who provide financial assistance to the Iranian regime,” Finance Minister Scott Bessent emphasized in a press release.

“We are keeping that promise by imposing sanctions on companies that continue to support Mahan Air. Let this serve as a warning to all those who conduct financial transactions with other Iranian airlines, all of which are currently subject to sanctions: “You run the risk of being cut off from the global financial system,” he continued.

U.S. sanctions function as an embargo, prohibiting U.S. companies and citizens from conducting transactions with the targeted entities.
