The highly publicized trial into the causes of Diego Maradona’s death has now entered a new phase. The first witnesses, called by the defense on behalf of the medical team on trial, testified in favor of “Dieguito” receiving home care.
The trial, which began in April, continued with its 40th session and testimony from two experts called by the defense team of psychologist Carlos Díaz.
The two addiction specialists distanced themselves from the idea—which other experts in the trial also supported—that, given his condition, particularly his addictions, Maradona should never have been placed in a specialized facility and should have been allowed to recover at home.
“The mental health law stipulates that any hospitalization must be a last resort and remain entirely exceptional,” emphasized psychologist Damian Barreiro.
Inácio O’Donnell, a sociologist who also specializes in addiction, pointed out that if a patient “is not using drugs and remains abstinent, there is no need to commit him.”
We note that the appropriateness, conditions, and broader management of Maradona’s recovery at home in late 2020, rather than at a clinic or rehabilitation center, are central issues in the trial, which is being held in San Isidro, north of Buenos Aires.
The trial is expected to conclude in October.
