A marriage proposal that didn’t go as the 33-year-old Polish tourist had dreamed it would marked the beginning of a dramatic ordeal in Ierapetra.
According to reports, the 33-year-old was vacationing in Crete with his partner, and they were staying at a five-star hotel in the area.
As reported by the same sources, at around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the 33-year-old proposed to his partner, who reportedly turned him down.
This turn of events, according to reports, affected him deeply. In a state of great agitation, he reportedly caused serious damage to his hotel room, breaking almost everything in it, before leaving the hotel.
He then headed toward Agios Andreas Beach. Reports indicate that he had consumed a large amount of alcohol (ouzo), and he reportedly had informed his partner of his intention to take his own life.
A few hours later, the 33-year-old was found unconscious in the sea; patrons at a nearby tavern noticed him in time and called for help.
The immediate response by the National Ambulance Service (EKAV) and the Ierapetra Port Authority, but above all the decisive efforts of the rescuers who entered the water to pull him out, proved critical to saving his life. The 33-year-old remains under medical observation in the ICU at Agios Nikolaos Hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable.
The Ierapetra Port Authority has taken charge of the preliminary investigation into the incident.
