At its recent meeting, the Political Bureau of the AKEL Central Committee decided that Haris Polykarpou will assume the role of the party’s new Press Secretary, replacing Giorgos Koukoumas, who is taking on increased parliamentary responsibilities.
According to a party statement, Haris Polykarpou is 42 years old. He was born in Nicosia and is originally from Gerolakko. He is married to Christina Nikolaou, and they have two children.
He is a graduate of the Department of Economic Policy at the Athens University of Economics and Business and the Department of International and European Studies at Panteion University, and holds a master’s degree in Economics and Finance from Queen Mary, University of London.
He is an economist and serves as the Head of the Economics Sector of the Central Committee of AKEL. In the past, he worked at the European Parliament as a parliamentary assistant, responsible for monitoring issues related to the European economy, labor, and the internal market.
Since 2016, he has been a member of the AKEL Central Committee; since 2021, a member of the AKEL Political Bureau; and since 2025, a member of the Secretariat of the AKEL Central Committee.
