Plans are moving forward for the creation of a Unified Operations Center in the Vasilikos area, with the aim of enhancing security and fostering more effective cooperation among all relevant agencies at the Energy Center, one of the most critical pieces of infrastructure in the Republic of Cyprus.
During the second meeting held today, following the first one convened last July by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr. Costas Fytiris, an update was provided on the progress of the actions that had been decided upon, and the next steps were outlined.
The location where the Unified Operations Center will operate has already been determined, and procedures for its establishment, operation, and staffing are underway. Members of the relevant agencies will participate in the Center to ensure a shared operational picture and the ability to respond immediately and in a coordinated manner to any incident.
At the same time, it was agreed to draw up an Action Plan and establish a Coordinating Committee, in which one representative from each relevant agency will participate. The Police will coordinate the Committee, convening meetings at regular intervals and monitoring the implementation of decisions and the progress of the work.
The basic approach is for the Vasilikos Energy Center to be treated operationally as a single site, both in terms of security and protection as well as health and safety, civil protection, and environmental protection.
The overall plan covers security on land, at sea, and in the air; the prevention and response to pollution incidents, including marine pollution; as well as rapid emergency response.
The meeting was chaired by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr. Kostas Fytiris, and the Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, Mr. Michalis Damianos. It was attended by officials from all relevant agencies, as well as representatives of companies operating in the region.
The goal is to create a unified and functional mechanism, with clear responsibilities and continuous monitoring of the plan’s implementation, to protect human life, the environment, and the region’s critical infrastructure.
