The clinic’s doctor, Ioanna Gaka, in her statement to the police.

According to her account, Giorgos Mazonakis had initially undergone an initial examination on Tuesday afternoon, during which it was determined that his body was under significant strain. As she reported, during the conversation that followed, the singer had difficulty even speaking.

Ms. Gaka stated that during her visit on Tuesday, Giorgos Mazonakis asked her what he could do immediately, as he was scheduled to appear at an event in the coming days and wanted to quickly improve his health.

As the doctor reported, she recommended a blood-purification procedure using a special machine, adding that she informed him this specific treatment had no side effects or contraindications, and he agreed to proceed.

The next day—Wednesday—according to the doctor’s testimony, Giorgos Mazonakis arrived at the clinic in Kolonaki, and then, she claims, she found that the singer had not slept, and she again noticed a problem with his articulation, since, as she said, “he wasn’t speaking properly.”

Describing the medical procedure she performed, Ioanna Gaka told the police that an IV catheter was inserted into Giorgos Mazonakis’s right arm, and then an attempt was made to insert a second IV catheter into his left arm,, as, according to her, this is required for that specific procedure.

The doctor also maintained that, up until that point, the 54-year-old singer’s vital signs had been normal, as his blood pressure, oxygen levels, and body temperature were all within normal ranges. However, as she claimed, while she was attempting to complete the insertion of the second IV catheter, she observed a sudden deterioration in Giorgos Mazonakis’s condition, with a drop in his blood pressure and oxygen levels.

The doctor stated that the procedure was immediately halted at that point and, according to her, she called her husband, with whom she began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the singer while simultaneously alerting the emergency medical services (EKAV), with resuscitation efforts continuing until the paramedics arrived.

Finally, in her testimony, the doctor asserts, on the one hand, that Giorgos Mazonakis was alive when he left the clinic in Kolonaki and, on the other hand, that all the equipment there is certified, pledging to provide the necessary certificates.

It should be noted, however, that according to reports, her husband—who was also the clinic’s owner—denied any involvement in the incident, claiming that his wife had full control of the clinic, performed the treatments, and monitored the patients.

However, despite the doctor’s claims that the clinic had certified equipment, both the president of the Athens Medical Association, George Patoulis, and the president of the Panhellenic Medical Association, Matina Pagonis, stated, on the one hand, that the clinic in question held a license for a pathology practice, which does not cover treatments such as plasmapheresis, and, on the other hand, that during the license inspection conducted in 2025, no such equipment was found.

George Mazonakis’s family appoints a technical advisor; autopsy scheduled for tomorrow

The family of Giorgos Mazonakis has requested that a technical advisor be appointed in order to fully clarify the causes of the singer’s death. The autopsy was originally scheduled for today but has been postponed until tomorrow, Friday (September 11), in the morning due to this development.

This morning, the Greek FBI conducted a search at the Stem Cell clinic where Giorgos Mazonakis suffered a cardiac arrest during a plasmapheresis treatment. An official from the Criminal Investigation Division also arrived at the clinic.

During the police search, in which officers thoroughly combed through the clinic, two plasmapheresis machines were found on the premises, which authorities believe the owners possessed legally.

The investigations are ongoing.
