The Police are warning the public about a scam involving individuals posing as police officers who aim to obtain personal information and money from citizens’ bank accounts.
According to reports filed with the police, the perpetrators contact citizens by phone and, speaking in Greek, falsely identify themselves as police officers from the Cybercrime Sub-Directorate. The phone numbers used by the perpetrators appear to be Cypriot landline numbers; however, authorities are investigating the possibility that these are fictitious numbers and that the perpetrators are calling from abroad.
The scammers falsely tell citizens who answer their calls that they have fallen victim to an online scam. They then ask these citizens to provide personal information, including their banking details, ostensibly to investigate the fraud.
The public is urged to be particularly cautious, as the perpetrators’ goal is to obtain personal information and steal money from citizens’ bank accounts.
As a precaution, citizens are advised to avoid following any instructions given by the fraudsters and not to disclose their personal information.
In cases where citizens have been deceived and have provided their banking information to suspicious individuals during such communications, they are urged to immediately notify the bank where they hold an account to prevent their money from being stolen.
Finally, the Police inform the public that they never contact citizens in this manner.
