The police issued an official statement regarding allegations that came to light concerning a woman, who underwent a plasmapheresis procedure at an unauthorized center operating illegally in the Larnaca district, suffered extensive blood clots throughout her body, and had to be hospitalized two years ago in the Intensive Care Unit.
According to the Police, “Regarding media reports concerning a complaint filed by the Ministry of Health with the Police regarding a specific treatment allegedly offered by a specific medical center, please be advised of the following: In November 2023, the Police received a letter from the Ministry of Health regarding the case of a patient who was hospitalized after experiencing serious complications, which were allegedly linked to a specific treatment the patient had received. The case was investigated by the Police, and after the investigation was completed, the file was forwarded to the Legal Service. The investigation did not yield sufficient evidence to establish any criminal offenses.”

Speaking today on the “Alpha News” program, the Director of the American Medical Center, Dr. Marinos Sotiriou, referred to the incident, stating that a woman who underwent plasmapheresis at an unauthorized center operating illegally in the Larnaca district and suffered extensive blood clots throughout her body, had to be hospitalized two years ago in the Intensive Care Unit of the American Medical Center.
“Her life was in danger, and unfortunately, the condition was very serious. Fortunately, she is well now, but we must be very careful not to demonize plasmapheresis. It is a specific treatment, with established protocols, that saves lives.”
As he pointed out, the center in question was established and operated during the COVID-19 pandemic and promised treatments to patients experiencing long-term symptoms from COVID-19.
“People who suffer greatly from such conditions, in their desperation, seek out treatments and centers of this kind, which subject patients to various therapies, including plasmapheresis and certain others, which have not been scientifically proven.”

Yesterday, Thursday, as a reminder, speaking on the Alpha News program, Michalis Anastasiadis, Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Pan-Cyprian Medical Association, described the serious risks inherent in such a“when it does not fall within the framework and institutions of medical science.”
“From time to time, we have identified and reported to the police specific self-proclaimed healers who employ certain methods and exploit the pain and anguish of patients or their relatives. From what I see and understand from media reports, this was also the issue raised by the popular artist, but the exact cause of death will be determined by the autopsy and the investigations into the case.”
Mr. Anastasiades did not hide his concern over the fact that such treatments appear to be carried out in Cyprus as well, citing as an example a center in the Larnaca area that promised “cleansing” from COVID-19 vaccines and was attracting clients even from abroad.
“Such a serious therapeutic procedure cannot be performed without the proper means or equipment. We are talking about criminal acts.”
