The sudden death of Giorgos Mazonakis at the age of 54 brought to the forefront, among other things, a medical procedure that until recently was relatively unknown to the general public: therapeutic plasmapheresis. The popular singer had gone to a private clinic in Kolonaki where, according to reports, he was about to undergo the procedure when he suffered a cardiac arrest and was transported to Elpis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The case, however, sparked a much broader debate surrounding plasmapheresis. What exactly is it? When is there a genuine medical indication? When is it appropriate to perform it? And how dangerous can it become when a specialized medical procedure is presented as a wellness treatment, “detox,” or anti-aging remedy?

In light of the discussion that has arisen, HELLO! contacted Dr. Petros Agathangelou, President of the Pan-Cyprian Medical Association (PIS), a specialist in cardiology and internal medicine, to explain what the situation is in Cyprus and what those considering such treatments should know.
