DIKO: Call for ministers not to jump the gun; all scenarios remain open until the presidential election

DIPA sees Nikola with certain conditions
ALPHANEWSLIVE

In the spring, after Nikos Christodoulides makes his announcement, DIKO will make its final decisions regarding the presidential election, with part of the leadership—including the party president—keeping all options open. Also on the table is the scenario of running independently, implying that their strengthened presence in the cabinet does not bind them to renew their mandate of support for the President of the Republic. There was discontent within DIKO following the statement by the Ministers of Energy and Health in support of Nikos Christodoulides.

“I believe that no party official, not even the party president, can preempt the decision of a collective body. We must respect the party’s collective bodies as well.” Giorgos Solomou

Consultations with the party’s rank-and-file have already begun at the district conference level. The party is awaiting an update from the President of the Republic regarding his intentions. However, since the cabinet reshuffle, their one-on-one meetings have become less frequent.

New Meeting

The DIKO secretariat is preparing to submit an official proposal to the Democratic bloc this month regarding the unification of the centrist political spectrum. Discussions will continue regarding the merger of the two parties under the DIKO umbrella, as well as the possibility of creating a new political group to bring them together. DIPA is not opposed to the idea, but it sets as a precondition the alignment of political positions and the initiation of an equal dialogue.

“It is right and politically sound for the center to be united, strong, and to play the political role it deserves.” Alekos Tryfonides

Reaffirmation of Support

The new president of EDEK crossed the threshold of the presidential office for her first meeting with Nicos Christodoulides.

“EDEK deserved to be in Parliament for many reasons, and I believe it will return. Welcome; I look forward to exchanging views.” Nicos Christodoulides, President of the Republic

She herself expressed a positive stance toward the party’s continued participation in the coalition government, without mentioning any resentment over not being included in the cabinet.

“For us, the relationship with the government is extremely important. We must play a more active role, not only on issues related to the Cyprus problem but also on issues of concern to society. EDEK is not just 3.3 percent—it is much larger.” Sofia Christodoulou, President of EDEK

They agreed to hold regular meetings to stay informed. The party’s president also visited the House of Representatives for a one-on-one meeting with Anita Dimitriou.

“It is with great pleasure that I welcome you. We have much to discuss.” Anita Dimitriou, President of DISY

The Speaker of the House described the election of a woman to such a historic party as an optimistic message for democracy.
