President Donald Trump said today that he would not be opposed if Chinese automakers were to manufacture cars in the United States, despite widespread opposition from U.S. lawmakers and automakers.
“If China wanted to come and open a factory to build their cars here, I’d be fine with that,” Trump said in an interview on the Fox News program “The Ingraham Angle.”
“Japan does it, but they hire our people. The important thing is that they hire our people,” he said.
Trump added that he doesn’t want Chinese automakers to build cars in Mexico and ship them to the United States. “I don’t look down on Chinese cars,” he said.
U.S. automakers have asked Trump, who is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in two weeks in Washington, not to agree to allow Chinese automakers access to the U.S. market.
On Wednesday, Michigan Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin stated that there are “rumors that Trump plans to allow Chinese cars to be sold in the U.S. as part of a broader agreement he is seeking. That would be a strategic mistake.”
Trump called Slotkin’s statement “a completely baseless rumor” and claimed that he kept Chinese vehicles out of the United States.
A regulation imposed in early 2025 by the administration of former President Joe Biden prohibits all Chinese automakers from selling or manufacturing passenger vehicles in the U.S. Washington also maintains tariffs of over 100% on Chinese electric vehicles.
