One person lost their life and 102 were rescued following the sinking of a passenger ship traveling from the island of Java to the island of Borneo in Indonesia during severe weather, the Indonesian Search and Rescue Agency announced today, adding that 140 people remain missing.
“We can confirm that the total number of passengers evacuated from the ship is 103,” said the local rescue chief, I Putu Sudayana.
One of the evacuated passengers died, the official told reporters at the port of Banjarmasin, in Borneo.
The fate of an Indonesian passenger ship carrying 243 people remains unknown today, as all contact was lost while it was traveling from the city of Surabaya in East Java to the city of Banjarmasinin South Kalimantan during bad weather, Indonesia’s search and rescue agency had reported earlier in a statement.
According to the agency in question, the vessel in question is the Virgo Transport 8, and search and rescue units have been dispatched to the location from which this passenger ship last transmitted a signal.
I Putu Sudajana stated that the 103 passengers were evacuated by various ships, and some were transported to a port in East Java. He did not disclose exactly what happened to the Virgo Transport 8.
