The unspeakable tragedy in Engomi occurred yesterday at 6:15 p.m., when the four-year-old boy fell from a closed balcony of the apartment where he lived with his parents, on the 6th floor of an apartment building on Andrea Mitropoulou Street.
The child’s chances of survival after a fall from a height of at least 20 meters were minimal from the start.
What followed were scenes of utter horror, as the father ran in a panic and found his child lying in a pool of blood in the apartment building’s parking lot. Neighbors say they are in shock.
“The girls were crying; I was trying to calm everyone down… the father was running ahead and I was following, but the baby had already fallen to the ground; I saw that his leg was broken and covered in blood.”
A neighbor’s account
At the time of the tragedy, the entire family was in the sixth-floor apartment: the father, the mother, and the 4-year-old’s younger sibling, a one-and-a-half-year-old girl.
“Police officers immediately arrived at the scene to investigate, while the child was transported by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital.”

Despite the superhuman efforts of the doctors in the Trauma Unit, the little boy lost his battle for life 35 minutes later, at 6:50 p.m.

Two hours after the unspeakable tragedy, the Nicosia CID’s investigation at the scene continues, where the 4-year-old’s mother remains; upon hearing the news of his death, she broke down in tears.
Late last night, the police arrested the parents, aged 32 and 33, on charges of causing death through a reckless, careless, or dangerous act.
“The couple was brought before the Larnaca District Court this morning, which ordered their detention for a period of five days.”

The Nicosia CID’s investigation is in full swing to clarify the circumstances under which the child slipped away from his parents’ supervision and fell to his death. The autopsy on the body of the boy, who would have turned four in December, will be performed tomorrow by medical examiners Angeliki Papetta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou.
