Three sailors were injured in a drone attack on a Russian cargo ship in the port of Novorossiysk, in yet another incident highlighting the growing exposure of commercial shipping to military operations in the Black Sea.
According to a security update from EOS Marine, the bulk carrier “Matros Koshka,” flying the Russian flag, was reportedly struck on September 12, 2026, while berthed in Novorossiysk, Russia.
The attack caused damage to the ship’s superstructure, specifically to the bridge, the living quarters, and the crew cabins. A fire also broke out, which was brought under control with the assistance of port authorities.
Three crew members were injured and taken to a hospital. The report does not provide further information regarding their condition.
As of September 13, the “Matros Koshka” remained immobilized in the port, awaiting the completion of the damage assessment and the issuance of further instructions. EOS Marine rates the reliability of the information regarding the incident as high.
Following this latest incident, vessels operating in the wider area are advised to maintain heightened visual surveillance and radar monitoring on a 24-hour basis. At the same time, areas of interest must be protected in accordance with the applicable guidelines, and any suspicious activity should be reported immediately to the relevant maritime security authorities.
Particular emphasis is also placed on monitoring local warning systems for airborne threats, as the risk of attacks involving drones or missiles remains high in the region.
