The news of Andreas Laou’s death has cast a shadow of grief over AKEL.
In a statement, the AKEL Limassol District Committee expressed its deep sorrow over the death of comrade Andreas Laou, “who for many decades served AKEL, the Popular Movement, and Limassol with consistency and dedication.”
Andreas Laos was born on August 30, 1945, and, as the party notes, he became actively involved from a young age and joined the ranks of AKEL at just 16 years old.
“A man with a keen social conscience and a deep commitment to the values of equality, social justice, and brotherhood, he remained faithful throughout his life to the struggle for a better and more just society.”
As he adds, throughout his life he served AKEL and the popular movement in various roles and positions of responsibility. He was a member of the AKEL Limassol District Committee and a Limassol City Council member with the AKEL City Council Group. His contribution to the Popular Movement of Agios Nikolaos, as well as to the Resistance Movement during the period 1971–1974, was particularly significant.
At the same time, he was a founder of the Laos Bros industrial company and served as Vice President of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, contributing his energy and experience to the city’s economic and social life.
His involvement in organizations and institutions related to education and social service was also particularly noteworthy. He served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of CUT, as well as on the University’s Student Welfare Committee, providing tangible support to young people and the university community.
“Until the end of his life, he remained active in public service as a member of the Board of Directors of the Pattichio Municipal Museum—Historical Archive and Center for Studies in Limassol. Through this involvement, he made a substantial contribution to the preservation, study, and promotion of the city’s historical memory and cultural heritage,” the statement added.
Andreas Laos served Limassol, AKEL, and the Popular Movement with consistency, responsibility, and selflessness. A gentle, modest, and unassuming man, with kindness and deep respect for those around him, he always chose the path of understanding, cooperation, and dialogue.
AKEL Limassol extends its sincere condolences to his wife, Niki, his children and grandchildren, his siblings, and all his loved ones.
