Alphamega Hypermarkets is organizing a unique encounter with Cyprus’s cultural heritage, inviting the public to celebrate the island’s traditions as a living part of our daily lives and our collective identity. On Sunday, September 27, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the outdoor area of the Alfamega Hypermarket in Engomi will be transformed into a large Cypriot festival, hosting the 2nd Festival of Cypriot Tradition “Cypriot and Authentic.”
An event open to everyone, which aims to bring different generations closer together through flavors, the arts, customs, music, and dance, highlighting everything that keeps authentic Cyprus alive and unites its people.
Culinary tradition will play a leading role at the festival, as visitors will have the opportunity to sample and taste beloved Cypriot products and traditional dishes. Fragrant Cypriot coffee, rose-flavored milk, warm palouzes, trahanas, and halloumi will take us back to the setting of our childhood, evoking familiar memories. Of course, no celebration would be complete without the spit-roasted meat and kleftiko, bringing everyone together around the table and reviving the atmosphere of a Cypriot courtyard and hospitality.
Christina Christofi, chef and Brand Ambassador for Alfamega Supermarkets, will enrich the culinary experience with her own creative touch, drawing inspiration from the flavors of Cypriot cuisine. She will prepare traditional “pourgouri” with tomatoes and invite young and old alike to roll up their sleeves and join her in making “sklinitsia,” the beloved handmade village-style pasta.
With the goal of having visitors become part of this grand celebration, the program will include traditional games such as rope skipping, egg races, and sack races, creative activities for children and adults, as well as workshops highlighting unique aspects of Cypriot crafts and folk art. Mosaics, pottery, and weaving are just a few of the activities that will give young and old alike the opportunity to experiment with different materials, create with their own hands, and experience firsthand traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation.
A special place at the festival will be reserved for the people who keep these arts alive. Mr. Hambis, with his “pithkiavlia,” and Mr. Andrikos with his “vourkes” will share their knowledge and experience with the audience, presenting elements of our region’s folk art in an authentic way.
The celebration will culminate with music and song, with the distinctive voices of Michalis Tterlikkas and Angelos Avgoustis bringing to the audience songs and melodies that have stood the test of time and remain an integral part of our folk tradition.
Through the “Cypriot and Authentic” Festival, Alphamega Hypermarkets seek to highlight the value of our cultural heritage and create a gathering place for families and the community, where the past meets the present.
Because tradition is a living legacy, full of scents, flavors, stories from the past passed down to the younger generations, and people who keep our handmade crafts alive. Above all, however, it lies in the need to come together, to share, to bond, and to create new memories through the things that connect us to our homeland.
Let’s work together to revive Cypriot tradition
