Tal Dillian, the Israeli businessman and central figure in the high-profile “black van” case, appears satisfied with Tal Dillian, appears satisfied with the Independent Anti-Corruption Authority’s decision to terminate the investigation it had announced three years ago.

In an exclusive written statement to ALPHA Cyprus regarding Cyprus and Greece, the businessman—who was convicted by the Greek courts— in connection with the wiretapping scandal, states that he has no doubt this clear-cut decision will disappoint those in Greece who hoped to link the two cases, based on a narrative rather than the actual facts.

He speaks of an important first step to quell the uproar that has been created and states that he is convinced the appeals process before the Greek courts will help restore his reputation and reveal the truth.

When asked by journalist Evangelos Agapios to comment on the latest developments in Cyprus in light of efforts to link the two cases— in Cyprus and Greece, and what significance he attaches to the next stage in Greece—where the evidence pertaining to these allegations will be examined—he replied in detail:

“Today’s announcement marks an important moment of clarification. The allegations concerning the so-called ‘black van’ case were thoroughly investigated in Cyprus five to six years ago. The matter was recently reexamined, independently, by a reputable anti-corruption authority, which reaffirmed that there is no basis or need for further investigation, precisely because the matters in question had already been properly examined.

I commend and respect the professionalism and independence of the Cypriot authorities, as well as the conclusions they reached following a thorough investigation. I have no doubt that this clear decision will disappoint those in Greece who hoped to link the two cases, relying on a narrative rather than on the actual facts.

After all, there is a fundamental difference between a narrative and the actual facts behind it. Repetition does not constitute proof, and political or media pressure cannot alter the facts.

For me, this is an important first step toward calming the “noise” that has been created. I remain convinced that, as proceedings in Greece move forward, the actual facts and evidence will receive due consideration and will help restore my reputation and reveal the truth regarding the charges brought against me and the other three defendants. Those who have long relied on this narrative may ultimately find that the facts paint a completely different picture.

Some may also find that the truth—which they already know—is even more difficult to reconcile with the narrative they have chosen to promote.”
