Washington today raised tariffs on a range of Canadian products as part of the trade war between the two neighbors.
Certain cheeses, animal furs, motorboats, and paper- or steel-based products are now subject to an additional 50% tariff upon import into the United States.
Conversely, goods that had been targeted for an additional tariff of the same magnitude are exempt. These include toilet paper, cement, and even whiskey in containers larger than four liters.
These changes were announced last week, after Ottawa imposed tariffs on U.S. products in response to additional tariffs previously imposed by Washington.
Angered by Canada’s response, the U.S. government also plans to ban the importation of certain Canadian products starting September 29. The list includes alcoholic beverages, a dairy product such as whey, and motorcycles with engines larger than 800 cubic centimeters.
With the world’s largest market on its border, the Canadian economy has for decades developed a heavy dependence on the United States, where nearly three-quarters of its exports are directed.
