The Mathiatis Group for the Protection of Historical and Environmental Heritage has expressed strong opposition to the proposed location of the new central prison in the community. In a statement, the group notes that “the proposed location of the new central prison in this specific area cannot be accepted for a number of environmental, ecological, hydrological, archaeological, urban planning, and land-use planning reasons.”
It refers to a unilateral decision by the Minister of Justice and Public Order, adding that it is cause for concern that the Minister is essentially preannouncing the location of the new central prisons in an environmentally sensitive and culturally significant area, of particular ecological value and great archaeological importance, without the required studies having even been commissioned or completed.
It also states that the construction and operation of the new central prison in the community should not even be up for discussion, given the conclusions of a recent Environmental Impact Statement, following a review of a related environmental study for another project in the same area. It calls on the Minister of Justice to abandon the idea and to comprehensively examine all available alternative sites for the new central prison.
