The Cyprus Hunting Federation has denounced the harassment of hunters by activists, following the recent scheduling of this issue for discussion by the Parliamentary Committee on the Environment.
“For years, the Federation has identified, denounced, and highlighted the serious problem of harassment faced by licensed hunters from individuals or organized groups during hunting activities,” it states in a press release, condemning “unequivocally any action aimed at obstructing or harassing citizens who are legally hunting.”
It further notes that “such behavior creates unnecessary tensions in the countryside, can endanger the safety of those involved, and does not contribute to social peace and mutual respect.”
At the same time, its stance “against poaching is clear and unwavering. We condemn all illegal hunting activities and support the effective enforcement of the law by the competent authorities.” It notes, however, that “respect for the law must apply to everyone. Just as hunters have an obligation to strictly comply with the law and safety regulations, so too do they have the right to engage in their lawful activity without intimidation, obstruction, or harassment.”
