Rodri explained the reasons that led him to say “yes” to Barcelona’s offer this summer, despite Real Madrid’s… keen interest.
In an interview with the newspaper “Mundo Deportivo,” the Spanish midfielder revealed that he was torn before making his decision—with the prospect of playing a key role being a major factor—and he made special mention of Deco and Hansi Flick.
“It wasn’t an easy decision. Saying no to Real Madrid is never simple, especially after the exceptional welcome they gave me. José Mourinho clearly expressed his desire to have me on his team and told me what I could contribute. The communication was very positive. “I made my decision for athletic reasons, based on what motivated me the most and my belief that here I could progress and thrive more as a player,” Rodri said initially.
He added meaningfully: “The leadership of Deco and Hansi made all the difference. They never put any pressure on me. Everyone expressed their desire to integrate me into the team, work with me, and see what I could contribute. I really appreciated their approach and the lack of pressure. I wanted a warm, family-like atmosphere. It wasn’t primarily about them convincing me with statistics—no. It was more about the soccer itself. I always base my decisions on athletic merit—on where I believe I can win, be happy, and, above all, develop as a player. That’s why I chose Barça.”
