The EU Special Representative for the Cyprus Issue, Raffaele Fito, is expected to hold talks in Athens and Ankara in the coming days; however, according to reliable sources, he is not expected to travel to New York during the High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly.
Mr. Fito’s meetings in Athens and Ankara are part of efforts to support the Cyprus peace process and are taking place in anticipation of upcoming talks between the two sides.
The UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cyprus, María Ángela Olguín, is expected to travel to New York during the General Assembly’s High-Level Week.
Regarding President Christodoulides’ schedule in New York, according to sources, preparations are underway for a series of meetings. Among other things, the President is expected to meet with the UN Secretary-General.
Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou and the special representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Dana, according to reliable sources who spoke to CNA.
During the Menelaou-Dana meeting, substantive issues, the methodology of the talks, and confidence-building measures were discussed.
The meeting served as a preparatory session ahead of the upcoming meeting between the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, which will take place on Thursday, September 17, at 11 a.m.
This will be the third meeting between the two leaders since UN Secretary-General António Guterres left Cyprus in late July. Mr. Guterres had called on both sides to make progress on confidence-building measures, methodology, and substantive issues.
