Oman is towing a tanker that was attacked; two people are missing

Another 23 crew members of the tanker were evacuated

The Oman Maritime Safety Center announced today that the Panama-flagged tanker El Gaia is being towed to a port in the country, after a fire broke out in its engine room following an attack.

The tanker was approximately 103 nautical miles northeast of Musandam when it came under attack, the same source noted. Twenty-three members of the tanker’s crew were rescued by an Omani Navy vessel, but two remain missing.

Yesterday, Monday, the U.S. military command responsible for the Middle East (U.S. Central Command, or CENTCOM) noted that the El Gaia “was struck by an Iranian missile last month,” rendering it immobilized. Over the weekend, it was attacked by an Iranian drone while off the coast of Oman and is currently “being towed by a regional partner.”

Furthermore, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British maritime security information service under the Ministry of Defense, announced that a ship was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday, Monday, according to a verified source.

No damage or environmental impact has been reported, and authorities are investigating the incident, the UKMTO added.
