As previously announced, starting in 2028, the Nations League will be restructured, with three divisions instead of four.
In order to ensure a smooth transition to the new format of the Nations League, the UEFA Executive Committee, at its meeting today in Thessaloniki, made the following decisions regarding the 2026–2027 Nations League, which begins next week:
Teams will be promoted and relegated between the divisions of the 2026–2027 Nations League for the next edition as follows:
- The four winning teams from the League B groups will be promoted to League A.
- From Division I, the two teams that finish last in the four Division I groups and have the worst goal difference will be relegated to Division II.
- The other two teams that finish last in Division A, along with the two teams that finish third in Division A, will compete in playoff matches against the four teams that finish in second place in Division B. The winners of the playoffs will compete in Division A, and the losers will compete in Division B.
- The four winning teams from the Division C groups will compete in Division B.
- The four teams that finish in last place in Division II will compete in playoffs against the teams that finish in second place in Division III. The winners of the playoffs will compete in Division II, and the losers will compete in Division III.
Since there will be no Fourth Division in the new structure, all teams from the Fourth Division will be promoted to the Third Division.
How this affects our national team:
The Cyprus national team will compete in Group B of Division C in the 2026–2027 Nations League. Its opponents are Montenegro, Armenia, and Latvia.
If our national team finishes first, it will be promoted to League B in the new 2028–2029 tournament.
If it finishes second, it will compete in a playoff against the team that finishes last in Division II. If it wins the playoffs, it will be promoted to Division II; if it loses, it will remain in Division III.
If it finishes in 3rd or 4th place, it will remain in Division C.
