Andreas Mavroyiannis is once again making a strong bid for the AKEL nomination as a candidate in the 2028 presidential election. Appearing as a guest on the “Alpha Enimerosi” program, he noted that the latest polls conducted by political parties—including DISY—currently place him at the top of the electorate’s preferences, which creates “momentum.”
“If we reach the summer of 2027 and Andreas Mavrogiannis’s momentum is at 0.0%, we’ll take another look. It’s not the end of the world.”
Mr. Mavrogiannis revealed that he recently had lunch with AKEL General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou, during which they discussed the matter, and he concluded that he meets the criteria set by the party for selecting a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic. At the same time, the two agreed to discuss further their views on Israel’s stance toward Palestine, as well as aspects of other international issues.
“It is AKEL’s support that would make a new candidacy viable. It would be difficult for me to be elected President of the Republic without AKEL’s support. Don’t forget that in 2023, with AKEL’s support alone, we reached the second round with 48 percent.”
When asked whether, if he is ultimately not selected as AKEL’s candidate, he would run in the 2028 presidential election, he replied that it is something he will decide next summer in consultation with his colleagues, while emphasizing, however, how important it is to have the support of a major party.
“They will begin their own processes with a target date of March. My idea is that, if my colleagues and I decide to do so, we’ll announce it earlier, not to tie AKEL’s hands, but to convey the sense that people will do what they think is right—it doesn’t mean we have to wait.”
Andreas Mavroyiannis admitted that so far he had met with Averof Neophytou once or twice, with whom he discussed matters in a friendly atmosphere and not “scenarios.”
“Mr. Averof Neophytou would be an excellent opponent.”
