The “black van” scandal is a long-standing case, and the way it has been handled not only irreparably discredits the institutions but also undermines the rule of law itself.
At this moment, two institutions—the Attorney General’s Office and the Anti-Corruption Authority—are in direct conflict. With one side essentially accusing the other of lying. And while society awaited the publication of the findings, it is watching in confusion as letters are exchanged and legal technicalities are cited to explain why the Anti-Corruption Authority’s investigation did not proceed. And in essence, this reinforces the sense of complete obscurity and a cover-up surrounding the issue.

The subject of the dispute today is whether or not to investigate the potential conflict of interest involving the Assistant Attorney General. It should be recalled that in 2023, the then Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides filed the relevant complaint with the Anti-Corruption Authority.
It is evident, both due to the timing and based on statements by Giorgos Savvidis, that this complaint has not been investigated by criminal investigator Ilias Stefanou. Consequently, the Anti-Corruption Authority can proceed as normal with the investigation involving the assistant attorney general.
The “black van” scandal undoubtedly has political dimensions that must not only be investigated but also made public. Either by establishing an independent investigative committee, as legal circles advocate, or by making Elias Stefanou’s findings public, or by allowing the Anti-Corruption Authority to carry out its work unhindered.
Otherwise, it is not just the image of the institutions that suffers. It reinforces the sense that someone wants to sweep this case under the rug.
