“We believe that protection, security, and prosperity between the two countries, as well as developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, are important priorities.” John Breslow, U.S. Ambassador
Donald Trump is sending a clear message to Nicosia through his new ambassador.
John Breslow’s first meeting with President Christodoulides highlighted the importance the United States attaches to the region, particularly with regard to military issues.
Such as the management of the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos.
According to information from Alpha, the new U.S. Ambassador expressed his intention to visit the Andreas Papandreou Air Base in Paphos very soon. There, based on the agreements, the Americans are set to begin construction projects in early 2027.
The President of the Republic also referred yesterday to the upgrade of the base by the Americans.
Security measures in the Eastern Mediterranean also include equipping the Cyprus Armed Forces with U.S. military equipment, based on Washington’s decision to continue lifting the arms embargo, a move that has caused intense displeasure in Ankara.
At the same time, however, Trump’s America shows no inclination to take the lead on the Cyprus issue, leaving any initiative to the United Nations and the European Union, while there is no new information regarding Cyprus’s inclusion in the visa waiver program.
Uncertain Outlook on the Cyprus Issue
On the Greek Cypriot side, intensive preparations are underway for Thursday’s meeting between the two leaders, which will be their last before both travel to New York, where they will meet with António Guterres.
“I believe things are on the right track, ten and a half months after we took office. We have made some progress, but I would like us to do more.On six of the seven points where the Secretary-General wants progress, we are ready to reach an agreement on all six. Especially on the issue of mixed marriages, we will stand firm.” Tufan Erhürman, Turkish Cypriot leader
These reports not only fall short of what is needed for the Secretary-General to convene an informal five-party meeting, but also fail to provide grounds for him to meet jointly with the leaders on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
