The Ministry of Health filed a complaint with the authorities against a medical center in the Larnaca district where hemodialysis machines were found.
“A letter was received today (dated September 14, 2026), from the Department of Medical Services, which refers to two medical centers where plasmapheresis machines were found. Upon receipt of the letter, instructions were issued to the Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department to investigate, in cooperation with the Department of Medical Services, whether the operation of these machines violates the relevant legislation.” Cyprus Police
According to the Minister of Health, last Thursday the ministry received information regarding a facility that provides services without being licensed as a clinic. Inspectors from the Ministry of Health visited the site on Friday to conduct an on-site inspection and prepared a report on their findings.
“To determine whether any criminal offenses have been committed. There is specific legislation governing the operation of private nursing homes, and it must be determined whether the procedures stipulated by that legislation have been followed.” Neophytos Charalambides, Minister of Health
“We have asked the center to suspend any work related to this matter. This treatment, plasmapheresis, or similar therapies must be performed based on medical indications by qualified personnel—healthcare professionals—in appropriate facilities. There should be no centers that are not licensed to perform these procedures.” Karolina Stylianou, Assistant Hospital Laboratory Technician
And this is not the first time the Ministry of Health has filed a complaint against this particular center. This is also confirmed by the former chair of the PIS Ethics Committee, who participated in the relevant investigation at the time.
“This center had never been licensed as a day care center, nor as a small clinic, nor as a nursing home under the law governing private nursing homes. Therefore, when the complaint reached us, inspectors visited the facility on the 22nd and 23rd.” Carolina Stylianou, Assistant Officer, Hospital Laboratory
“The police investigated based on our complaint. The police forwarded the case to the Office of the Attorney General, and the Attorney General’s Office ruled that there was insufficient evidence to establish a case and that, based on the available data, no criminal offense had been substantiated, so the case was closed.” Vassos Oikonomou, Former Chair of the PIS Ethics Committee
According to the newspaper Politis, the center in question has entrusted its legal counsel with handling the case.
Mapping
The health minister has issued instructions for a broader mapping of facilities where invasive treatments—which he characterizes as high-risk—are provided.
“Especially when specialized medical equipment is used or for medical procedures marketed as anti-aging, detox, wellness, and so on. My instructions are for this mapping to be completed within 15 days.” Neophytos Charalambides, Minister of Health
As he himself revealed, there is still one more report regarding a center, which is currently being evaluated.
