It’s time for Olympiacos to take the stage in Europe, as the team kicks off on Wednesday (10:00 p.m.) their Europa League group stage campaign, hosting Jagiellonia at “G. Karaiskakis” Stadium.
The Piraeus-based team enters its new European campaign with high expectations, with a home victory as its top priority. Imanol Alguacil emphasized the importance of treating each game separately, stressing that what matters is securing a victory against the Polish team and the team’s gradual improvement.
The Spanish coach has studied Jagiellonia and expects an opponent that won’t limit itself to a passive role. As he noted, the Polish team tries to build its play from the back, has good ball movement, covers the spaces well, and can create danger from the wings. For Olympiacos, therefore, concentration on defense and greater efficiency in the opponent’s box are required.
At the same time, the match comes just a few days after the “Red-and-Whites’” disappointing result in the league against OFI, which heightens the need for a strong performance and a positive start in Europe. Santiago Ese emphasized that the team wants to return to strong performances and positive results, while making it clear that the players must support one another in every aspect of the game.
On the field, Al-Ghuathil will be without Gustavo Sa, who is injured, while Kostas Fortounis has also been left out of the squad due to suspension. On the other hand, Roman Yaremchuk is available, having taken Ayoub El Kaabi’s place on the European roster.
Finally, Olympiacos wrapped up its transfer activity in style, signing Marius from Samsunspor to lead the attack, though the African player is ineligible to participate in the Piraeus club’s European matches.
