Real Madrid has bolstered its backcourt by announcing the signing of Nick Smith Jr.
The 22-year-old star (1.88 m), who signed a one-year contract, spent the first three seasons of his professional career in the NBA with the Hornets and the Lakers.
Last season, he played in 30 regular-season games for the Lakers, averaging 6.2 points and 1.0 assist in 12.5 minutes per game. He shot 43.5% from the field and 39.5% from three-point range. He also appeared in six playoff games last season, though he played a total of just 18 minutes.
Before moving to Los Angeles, he spent two seasons in Charlotte. His best year in the NBA was the 2024–25 season, during which he averaged 9.9 points, 2.4 assists, and 2.1 rebounds in 60 games, starting in 27 of them.
He was selected by the Hornets with the 27th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, following one season at Arkansas. In his only college season, he averaged 12.5 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, but played in only 17 games due to a right knee injury.
