The Democratic Alarm is launching a fierce attack against AKEL and Odysseas Michaelides regarding developments in the high-profile “black van” case.
In a written statement, they state that “for the Democratic Alarm, the position is clear, and we have proven it in practice: full transparency, accountability, investigation of every case—everything out in the open and no cover-ups for anyone, regardless of where they come from or who they are.”
“At AKEL,” the party notes, “it often seems to enjoy taking on all roles at once: that of the complainant, the investigator, the prosecutor, the judge, the appellate judge, and, when necessary, even that of… European Court of Human Rights. We have seen this same view expressed by Odysseas Michaelides and now by Alma.”
DISY emphasizes that “first they issue a political verdict, and then they look for the evidence and the relevant institutions to confirm it. Of course, when it comes to ‘their own,’ they are ‘innocent’ from the outset, and no investigation is required.”
Read the statement verbatim:
For the Democratic Alarm, the position is clear, and we have proven it in practice: full transparency, accountability, investigation of every case—everything out in the open and no cover-ups for anyone, no matter where they come from or who they are.
Full respect for institutions and the rule of law means exactly that.
It means that the competent authorities carry out their work independently and that, wherever they deem supplementary investigations, a re-examination, or any other procedure to be necessary, this is decided institutionally, in a coordinated manner, and in accordance with the powers defined by the Republic.
It is not the role of political parties to decide who should be investigated, how they should be investigated, or what the outcome of an investigation should be.
We do not appoint ourselves as complainants, investigators, prosecutors, and judges.
There are institutions, there are procedures, and there is the rule of law.
And this is precisely one of our fundamental differences with AKEL.
AKEL often seems to enjoy taking on all these roles at once: that of complainant, investigator, prosecutor, judge, appellate judge, and, when necessary, even that of… European Court of Human Rights.
First, they issue the political verdict, and then they look for the evidence and the relevant institutions to confirm it. Of course, when it comes to “their own,” they are “innocent” from the outset, and no investigation is required.
We’ve seen this same mindset expressed by Odysseas Michaelides and now by Alma, as he has repeatedly assumed roles beyond those institutionally assigned to him or, today, to his political party.
The Democratic Alarm will not replace the Anti-Corruption Authority, the Legal Service, the judiciary, or any other competent authority.
