A total of 106 people, including two journalists, were detained on Tuesday by police in Istanbul during a protest rally against the recent operation called “My Family Is Safe,” which targets LGBTQI+ organizations.
According to Turkish media, activists gathered yesterday outside the Istanbul Courthouse to protest the operation.
The police informed the crowd that they would not be allowed to hold a press conference and, shortly thereafter, cordoned off the group.
A total of 106 people were subsequently detained. Among those detained were journalists Sarya Toprak and Şener Azak, who were covering the events.
According to Turkish media reports, although the police reportedly stated that the two journalists would be released, the subsequent proceedings took quite some time.
The police also detained a female activist who was shouting slogans outside the courthouse in protest of the arrests.
